Do you have a room that needs just that little extra something?  With a little creativity, you can spruce up any room with minimal effort.  All you need is a bit of time, a vision for the room, some paint and some wall pattern knowledge.

Long ago, rooms used to be just one neutral color.  Today’s living spaces are more of a personal reflection of the overall style of the home and the personality of its owner. People create accent walls or add murals to create variety/visual appeal.

Yet, what if you are bored of all of that?

Here are some creative ways to make your living space a little bit more engaging:

Randomly Place Various Sized Rectangles

Randomly placed rectangles can provide intrigue to any wall.  Choose cool shades of grey for a modern design or brighten things up with vibrant reds for that pop of color.

This design works best on homes with a modern, contemporary feel.  Use them for minimalistic homes as they create clean, crisp, clearly defined lines within a space.  This design does not require an artistic flair, just an eye for color.

To incorporate this feature, select three or four colors in a specific hue.  Map out where to paint the rectangles on the wall using painter’s tape.  Rectangles look best at multiple sizes, placed both horizontally and vertically.  Have fun painting each rectangle a different, yet complementary shade.

Ensure paint has completely dried before peeling off the tape.  Also, ensure no color has bled through as well.  Although the tape should help prevent this from occurring.

Be Bold With Nordic Blue Hues

Scandinavian designs incorporate the blue-gray hues of the Nordic blue color palate.  This option is best for a minimalist interior.

You can do this effect using any shape, incorporating various shapes or different angles.

Painter’s tape is required to mark straight, clean lines and avoid bleeding into other colors.  Again, ensure all paint is completely dry (it shouldn’t be tacky) before removing the tape.

Get “Bee”zy With a Honeycomb Pattern

Spruce up plain white walls by incorporating a honeycomb pattern.  A honeycomb pattern involves masking off a series of hexagonally shaped areas in an interlocking pattern.  Leave a small space between each side of the honeycomb, then add the adjacent piece.

You can do one huge honeycomb pattern on a wall or group one large pattern with a few select smaller groupings.

This design allows the individual to play with color.  The most effective way to do this is to pull random colors in the room together by incorporating them into the design.

It is advisable to use brighter shades for a children’s room and more toned-down hues for the living room/dining area.  This pattern can be visually overwhelming if bright colors are in the main spaces.

Create Visual Height With an Ombre

Whether it is to create a breezy bedroom or to make a room appear larger, Ombres add that wow factor to any wall.

On the surface, they appear difficult to do.  However, it may not be as challenging as you might surmise.

Select a “base” shade.  Then two additional shades to accompany it that are several shades or so sequentially above it.  You don’t want the differences to be so subtle that you don’t notice the gradient of colors.  Plus, they shouldn’t be so drastic that they appear disjointed.

They should gradually flow into each other.

To do an ombre effect, tape off the wall with painter’s tape.  Pour each color of paint into individual trays.

Using a roller, cover it in the lightest color of paint.  Paint the entire wall. Then, select the darkest paint color.  Add an 18-inch stripe of color at the top of the wall.  Use the medium shade to incorporate an 18-inch stripe approximately one inch directly below the previous (darkest) one.

Do the next step rapidly, so the stripes don’t have time to dry.  Add a bit of the medium color to the darkest paint color.  Stir by using a craft stick to blend both colors.

Utilize a wet brush to apply the mixture to the space between the stripes.  Be sure to blur and blend the colors.

Add the lightest color to the medium-colored paint.  Mix them together.  Using a clean wet brush, apply it below the second stripe.  Blur and blend this section until the stripe fades into the base coat.

Continue adding color so that each section blends neatly with the other.  Then allow the paint to dry.

Go Gingham Style

Gingham walls are great for a room with a rustic vibe.  In essence, this pattern involves painting squares on a wall.  However, it is a little more encompassing.

To incorporate this design, you must carefully study the shade used, plan what you will do next, and keep each line straight.

Choose a light, medium, and dark shade of a color.  This type of style usually works best on a white background color.  You may also be able to use a cream color with some hues.

Measure the wall to determine the stripe pattern.  Calculate the number that the height and width measurements are divisible to determine your stripe width.

Tape the lines horizontally by using these measurements on the wall.  Ensure they are straight, then tape on the outside of each area to be painted.  Utilize a level as you progress to ensure lines are straight.

Cover each selected stripe with a thin coat of your predetermined color.  Small rollers provide for an even look.  Avoid paint brushes as it leaves brush lines behind, creating a weathered look that is not suited to the boldness of this pattern.

It will look amateurish.

Remove the tape and allow the paint to dry for one day.

The next day, do the same thing, except with vertical stripes and a different color shade.  Paint the last set and allow 24 hours for it to dry.  Then, you are finished!

Dice Things up With Diagonals

Creating a diagonal wall pattern is the easiest design to implement, and you can easily use it to upgrade blank walls to an elegant, attractive, and sleek design.  Diagonal lines of various thicknesses and shades generate an upbeat and trendy feel to any room.

This look is the ideal style for a minimalist or clean home.

Achieve this style by incorporating the methods mentioned above with masking off sections and painting each with different colors according to your desired pattern. A wall pattern such as this one, can really enhance the look of a room.

Sophistication Begins with Elegant Lines

This style works best in bedrooms where the headboard is a solid, bold piece.  This wall should be an accent wall and darker in hue than the others.

To achieve this look, paint one wall a significantly darker shade than the rest of the room, and allow 24 hours for it to dry completely. Then, paint thin black lines in a pattern to generate a chic, elegant, modern appearance.

Gorgeous Geometrics

Bright, colorful geometric patterns are great for rooms that require either a pop of color or a more upbeat feel.  It is perfect for the living room or family room.

The vibrant colors are eye-catching, and the diagonal strokes of this pattern generate a dynamic, creative look.

You can create a geometric pattern in the same way you achieve a diagonal one.  The only difference is the varying thickness and angle of the lines.

This design is more complex, as you divide the wall into varying sections.  However, if done correctly, a 3-D effect is achieved.

Here are some great ideas for using geometric shapes on the walls.

The Great Vertical Divide

The words sleek, attractive, modern, and creative all describe this design.  Room interiors come to life with the three-toned vertical division of paints.

To do this look, select three complimentary colors.  Mask off each section.  The top section should have the most space, the bottom, the second-most, and the middle section is reserved for the stripe.

The top color should be your medium/complementary shade.  The bottom is your darkest, while the medium is the lightest, accent shade between the two.

Create an even more dazzling effect by adding various-sized boxed picture frames on one side of the wall.  The bottom frame should overlap the stripe for greater visual appeal.

These creative, outside-the-box ideas will create a buzz with friends and family.  They are unique, different, and creative ways to change up a living space.

While most people are still at the accent wall and mural phase, you have elected to be the trendsetter of home decor!  These designs create that wow factor to any space, and they are versatile enough, in most cases, to be added to any room.

While designs range from easy to hard, the effect is worth all of the time, money, and effort applied to it.
